But what exactly is Pickleball? It’s a question on many minds as the sport gains recognition everywhere, and Rockwell Club is now one of the premier places to discover it.

Introducing Pickleball: The Sport Taking Rockwell by Storm

A fusion of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, pickleball is a paddle sport that has been gaining admiration from all ages worldwide.

Played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, it utilizes a paddle and a plastic ball with holes. The game is accessible to players of all ages and skill levels, making it a perfect activity for families and individuals alike.

Where did Pickleball Originate?

To understand the allure of Pickleball, it’s helpful to know its quirky origins. The game was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. As the story goes, the friends were looking for a game to entertain their bored children during the summer. They improvised with a wiffle ball, badminton rackets, and a lowered badminton net on an asphalt surface.

As they experimented with the rules, they borrowed elements from badminton, tennis, and table tennis, gradually shaping the game into what we know today. The name “Pickleball” is said to have come from Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who had a habit of chasing after the ball. While the exact story may be debated, the playful name perfectly encapsulates the fun and lighthearted spirit of the game.

How to Play Pickleball

Pickleball is played on a court that is similar in size to a badminton court, using a net that is slightly lower than a tennis net. Players use solid paddles, slightly larger than those used in table tennis, to hit a perforated plastic ball (similar to a wiffle ball) over the net. The rules are relatively simple, making it easy for beginners to pick up the game quickly. Here’s a basic overview:

1. Serving: Serves are underhand and must be hit below the waist. The server must stand behind the baseline and aim for the service box diagonally opposite them.

2. Double-Bounce Rule: After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side of the net before either team can volley it in the air. This rule encourages longer rallies and prevents players from dominating the net early in the game.

3. The Kitchen: A non-volley zone, also known as “the kitchen,” extends seven feet from the net on both sides. Players cannot volley the ball while standing in the kitchen. This rule prevents players from crowding the net and encourages strategic play.

4. Scoring: Games are typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by two points. Points are scored only by the serving team.

Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles, but doubles is more common, fostering a social and team-oriented environment.
